The expanded center is a 4000 square foot state of the art facility with an experienced staff devoted to the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of the eye health and vision problems of patients of all ages. The new building provides full handicap accessibility and handicapped parking. Slide away exam chairs and specialized equipment allow for the comfortable and complete examination of patients with wheelchairs or other mobility aids. A pair of true twenty foot exam lanes combined with computerized equipment assist the doctors in determining the most accurate eyeglass prescriptions possible.
The adult waiting area features a flat screen patient education center where patients can view presentations about various eye conditions and procedures. These presentations can be viewed again during the exam on lap top computers as needed. Children receive special care with their own waiting/activity room. Individualized children's eye exams and a separate children's optical dispensary with over 400 eyeglass frames are also available. The entire optical dispensary fills approximately 1000 square feet of the building. It consists of adult eyewear, children's eyewear, prescription and nonprescription sunwear, safety glasses, and sports eyewear. With over 1500 frames on display, it is one of the largest eyewear selections ever assembled in Nelson County.
The expansion has made possible the addition of special diagnostic services and equipment:
A 15 megapixel Retinal Camera for digital documentation and education. Images of the inside and outside of the eye including the retina, nerves, and blood vessels can be captured and displayed on monitors at chairside to help the doctors more easily explain the conditions they detect. Images can be sent over the internet for specialists in other cities to view.
A Sonogage Pachometer. This ultrasound device measures the thickness of the cornea, the clear front layer of the eye, which helps in the diagnosis of glaucoma and the fitting of specialty contact lenses.
The Humphrey II visual field instrument and the FDT visual field instrument. Both of these devices test peripheral vision and optic nerve function. They assist in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and other neurological disorders.
The GDx Nerve Fiber Analyzer - The GDx uses a special laser to "scan" the nerve fibers inside the eye to help determine if nerve damage has occurred. This has proven to be a useful tool in the early detection of glaucoma.
The Wave Corneal Topographer. This device assists the doctors in creating custom fit contact lenses, bifocal contacts, contacts to correct astigamatism, and even contact lenses that can reversibly change the shape of the eye and correct vision. Topography assisted contact lens design is another first in Nelson county. | |
